Getting to K'gari from Hervey Bay
Three legs, two of them booked with other people. Here is the order to do it in.
First, the constraint
K'gari is the world's largest sand island and a World Heritage area. It has sand tracks, not sealed roads. Access is restricted to suitable four-wheel-drive vehicles, and permits apply for vehicles and camping. A coach or minibus cannot drive on the island — no operator can change that.
The two mainland crossings

The right booking order
- 1. Decide how you are experiencing the island — day tour, resort stay, or self-drive four-wheel drive
- 2. Book that. It determines your crossing point and your sailing times
- 3. Book the barge or passenger ferry if it is not included
- 4. Then book the mainland transfer, timed to the check-in cut-off
- 5. Confirm who meets your group on the island side
Why groups get this wrong
The common mistake is booking transport first and discovering the sailing times do not work. The boat is the fixed point. Everything else, including us, arranges around it.
What we do
